All About Plants!

This is a website created by me, August Collman. As you know, I have been working on the Personal Project for over a month now.
I knew really wanted to learn how to code because of my limited knowledge of coding, so by utilizing certain skills like critial thinking,
research, self-management, and other ATL skills, I was able to finally live my dream! So, here is a website I created from scratch.
I hope you enjoy and maybe learn something about plants!

Vauquelinia

Pictured above is a Vauquelinia, commonly known as the rosewoods. They are found in the southwestern United States and northwesten Mexico.

What is classified as a plant?

There are a couple ways to accurately classify flora as plants. Logically, it's easy to see a plant and say, "that's a plant!"
However, there is a scientific process to it. The indicators include:
  1. Presence or absence of differentiated body (root, stem, leaf).
  2. Presence or absence of vascular tissues.
  3. Presence or absence of seeds.
By following these classification steps, scientists can determine if an organism is a plant or not.
There are more specific classification steps that put a plant into a certain family the break it down from kingdom to family.

What do plants do?

Plants have many environmental benefits. They reduce erosion and enegry consumption, improve water quality, and enhance biodiversity.
Plants also have positive impacts on every other lifeforms. After all, we can't live without plants like trees and flowers!

Aside from plants having benefits for the environment, they can also personally benefit you. They can:

pretty pink flowers

Native North Carolina Plants

As a general rule, native plants are very important to an ecosystem. They were the plants that were meant to be in a certain
region. They have all sorts of natural benefits to other biotic factors, which means they keep them alive. Here is a list
of native plants to take extra care of:

Common Invasive North Carolina Plants

Invasive plants are just what they sound like. They are plants from other areas that are intoduced to an ecosystem, and
because they don't belong there, they have biological advantages. They tend to steal sunlight, suck nutrients out
of native plants, negatively impact the diet of animals
, and many other things. Here is a list of common invasive
plants in North Carolina to watch out for:

  • Tree of Heaven (Copal Tree)
  • Bradford Pear Tree
  • Parrot-feather
  • These three plants are all listed on the FNWL (Federal Noxious Weed List). They are a problem in every state.
